On March 23, 2013, the inaugural Wine Symposium of the Finger Lakes will be held at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. This premier event will bring together serious wine and food lovers from all over to enjoy, learn and experience fine wines and food pairings from sommeliers, chefs and other wine and culinary experts.
The Finger Lakes is being recognized as North America’s preeminent cool-climate wine growing region and home to world-class Riesling. In recognition, the Wine Symposium includes the Finger Lakes AVA Riesling Challenge wine competition. This competition, on February 15, 2013, is only open to Finger Lakes wineries having production facilities within the Finger Lakes AVA, and only Riesling wines compliant with Finger Lakes AVA regulations. Under the supervision of Chief Judge Steve DiFrancesco, wines will be judged by panels of Finger Lakes winemakers and within classes that correspond to the taste profile developed by the International Riesling Federation (IRF). Trophies will be awarded for the “Best in” IRF classes of Dry, Medium Dry, Medium Sweet and Sweet Riesling. For more information on the IRF and the IRF taste profile, please consult the website drinkriesling.com. Certificates of Excellence will be awarded to wines included in the finals for each class.
The winning wines will be announced and the trophies awarded at the Wine Symposium Luncheon. Winning wineries will present their wines during the walk around tasting that follows the luncheon and the winning wineries and wines will be posted on the Symposium’s website. Additionally, a press release announcing the winners will be distributed and results will be sent to each entrant.
The Wine Symposium of the Finger Lakes and the Finger Lakes AVA Riesling Challenge wine competition are breaking new ground for the Finger Lakes and will draw media and consumer attention as never before. We invite you to join us as we bring the spotlight for fine wine and food experiences to the Finger Lakes.
